On the first day, incoming students meet their classmates. The day is given to social activity and group building (though the specific program is a surprise), allowing students to interact and develop a broader knowledge of their peers. Neat, casual clothing (shorts, t-shirts and gym shoes) is the dress code for the day. The program lasts from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
On the second day, new students meet their teachers and attend courses, in addition to other orientation activities. This day begins at 8:00 a.m. and runs through 2:00 p.m. with lunch provided. The schedule is largely devoted to familiarizing students with policy aspects of Covington Latin, great and small, such as schedule, locker assignments, binder system, dining at CLS, etc.
These days are offered exclusively for incoming students to acclimate prior to the arrival of continuing students. The two day orientation serves as prelude for an ongoing orientation over the first two weeks of class, in which one period per day will be devoted to various areas of the School such as the library, guidance, academic support, athletics, disciplinary policy, etc.
Parent orientations are offered for students of each Form. It is vital that at least one parent is present for these informative meetings. Meeting dates and times will be mailed and available on our calendar. Parent Orientations are strongly tailored to the nuances of the particular Form your son or daughter will be entering. The parent of a student who just completed the Form your student is entering will be there to present the events, experiences and challenges inherent in the student experience in that particular year and generally informing parent expectations.
Parent mini-schedule night provides an opportunity for faculty to share expectations of incoming students with parents. An overview of the student schedule will also be provided, taking parents through a typical day at Latin School. Related academic topics, such as grading, work expectation and the like will be thoroughly reviewed as well.
